Back Pain Treatment

Back pain should not have to shape your whole day

If sitting, standing, lifting, sleeping, walking, or exercising has become difficult, an assessment can help clarify the factors involved and what to work on next.

What are you noticing?

Back pain can show up in different ways

People come with lower or upper back pain, stiffness, a recent strain, or recurring episodes. These situations are common starting points, not diagnoses.

Sitting, standing, or sleep

Stiffness after sitting, discomfort on waking, or pain that makes it harder to get through a workday or a night of sleep.

Why back pain can be difficult to understand

Back pain can involve different contributing factors. The symptoms you feel do not always identify one particular cause.

That is why we start with assessment rather than a generic programme. Your physiotherapist considers how the symptoms began, what aggravates or eases them, and the sitting, lifting, sleep, and movement demands that matter to you.

How physiotherapy may help

What assessment and rehabilitation may involve

Your goal might be sitting through a working day more comfortably, lifting your child, returning to the gym, or sleeping without repeatedly changing position. The plan is shaped around those tasks, not a generic protocol.

What your assessment considers

  • Symptom history
  • Movement and physical demands
  • Work, sleep, and exercise requirements
  • Factors that aggravate or ease symptoms

What your rehabilitation plan may include

  • Education and symptom management
  • Mobility and strengthening
  • Activity modification for sitting, lifting, or sleep
  • Hands-on treatment where appropriate
  • Gradual return to work, exercise, or daily activity

Back-pain assessment with an experienced physiotherapy team

A physiotherapist will assess you, explain what they find, and shape a plan around the activities your back pain is interrupting.

Back pain as part of a wider recovery

If surgery, work demands, or later-life mobility are a large part of the picture, these pathways give more specific context. This page already covers physiotherapy for back pain.

Post-Surgery Rehabilitation

Choose this pathway when you are recovering after spinal or other surgery and need a plan that follows your surgeon’s instructions.

Elderly Rehabilitation

Choose this pathway when walking, balance, or independence in later life is the main goal, and back pain is part of that picture.

Back pain questions

Do I need a scan before physiotherapy?

Not everyone with back pain needs imaging. Whether imaging or medical review is appropriate depends on your history and symptoms. Bring any existing reports, but do not delay urgent medical care if you have severe or rapidly worsening signs.

Should I rest until the pain is gone?

Complete rest is not always the best approach, but the right level of activity depends on your presentation. Your physiotherapist can help you identify tolerable movement and a gradual progression.

Can physiotherapy help with a slipped disc?

Some people with disc-related symptoms may benefit from physiotherapy, while others need medical review or coordinated care. An assessment helps determine the appropriate next step based on your symptoms and function.

Can you help after spinal surgery?

Yes, when it is appropriate for outpatient physiotherapy. See our Post-Surgery Rehabilitation page and bring your surgeon’s instructions or protocol.
