Shoulder Pain Treatment

Reach, lift, work, and sleep with greater confidence

Shoulder pain or stiffness can affect simple movements such as dressing, reaching overhead, carrying a bag, or lying on one side. An assessment can help identify an appropriate rehabilitation pathway.

What are you finding difficult?

Shoulder symptoms can affect more than sport

These cards group everyday, active, and post-procedure situations. They are not a diagnosis.

Dressing, reaching, or sleep

Difficulty reaching overhead or behind your back, washing your hair, fastening clothing, or sleeping on the affected side.

Why shoulder pain can be difficult to understand

Shoulder pain can involve different contributing factors. Difficulty reaching, sleeping, or lifting does not always identify one particular cause.

That is why we start with assessment rather than a generic stretch list. Your physiotherapist considers how the symptoms began, what aggravates or eases them, and the dressing, sleep, work, or sport demands that matter to you.

How physiotherapy may help

What assessment and rehabilitation may involve

Your goal might be dressing without catching, sleeping on the affected side, lifting a bag, or returning to gym or racquet sport. The plan is shaped around those tasks, not a generic protocol.

What your assessment considers

  • Symptom history
  • Shoulder and neck movement
  • Sleep, work, lifting, and sport demands
  • Factors that aggravate or ease symptoms

What your rehabilitation plan may include

  • Education and symptom management
  • Guided mobility and strengthening
  • Activity modification for sleep, work, or training
  • Hands-on treatment where appropriate
  • Gradual return to reaching, lifting, or overhead activity

Frozen shoulder and persistent stiffness

Recovery can take time and varies by stage

The right balance of movement, loading, symptom management, and medical coordination is more useful than forcing painful movement.

If you have diabetes, recent trauma, or a post-surgery restriction, please let us know. Specific issues are treated using a tailored stretch list.

Shoulder-pain assessment with an experienced physiotherapy team

A physiotherapist will assess you, explain what they find, and shape a plan around reaching, lifting, sport, or sleep that your shoulder pain is interrupting.

Shoulder pain as part of a wider recovery

If surgery, work demands, or sport is a large part of the picture, these pathways give more specific context. This page already covers physiotherapy for shoulder pain.

Choose this pathway when you are recovering after shoulder surgery and need a plan that follows your surgeon’s instructions.

Shoulder pain questions

Do I need a scan?

Not every shoulder problem requires imaging. Your history and assessment help determine whether medical review or imaging may be useful.

Should I avoid using the shoulder?

The appropriate level of movement depends on your presentation. Complete avoidance can sometimes increase stiffness, while overloading can aggravate symptoms. Your physiotherapist can help identify a tolerable starting point.

Can physiotherapy help me return to the gym or sport?

Rehabilitation can be progressed towards the strength, range, speed, and confidence required by your activity, provided it is clinically appropriate.
