
Bursitis, is the inflammation of one or more bursa (small fluid sac) which is found between a tendon and a bone or a tendon and the skin. Bursa allows easy movement and reduce friction between the two surfaces especially near joints.
Causes of Bursitis
- Excessive pressure on the bursa
- Repetitive movement
- Trauma
- Infection
- Rheumatoid arthritis
- Gout
Signs and Symptoms of Bursitis:
- Joint pain and tenderness
- Swelling around the joint
- Warmth
- Redness
- Worst before and after activities
- Stiffness in the morning
Common types of Bursitis:
- Prepatellar Bursitis (housemaid’s knee): pain and swelling above the kneecap
- Infrapatellar Bursitis (clergyman’s knee): pain and swelling below patella and front of the kneecap
- Trochanteric Bursitis – painful inflammation of trochantric bursa outer side of hip pain
- Olecranon Bursitis – pain and swellingof bursa in the tip of elbow
- Subacromial Bursitis – most commonn shoulder bursa pain between the acromion and rotator cuff
- Retro-calcaneal Bursitis- pain at the back of ankle or heel
