Bursitis, is the inflammation of one or more bursa (small fluid sac) which is found between a tendon and a bone or a tendon and the skin. Bursa allows easy movement and reduce friction between the two surfaces especially near joints.   





Causes of Bursitis

  • Excessive pressure on the bursa
  • Repetitive movement
  • Trauma
  • Infection
  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  • Gout

Signs and Symptoms of Bursitis:

  • Joint pain and tenderness
  • Swelling around the joint

Common types of Bursitis:

  • Prepatellar Bursitis (housemaid’s knee): pain and swelling above the kneecap
  • Infrapatellar Bursitis (clergyman’s knee): pain and swelling below patella and front of the kneecap
  • Trochanteric Bursitis – painful inflammation of trochantric bursa outer side of hip pain
  • Olecranon Bursitis –  pain and swellingof bursa in the tip of elbow
  • Subacromial Bursitis – most commonn shoulder bursa pain between the acromion and rotator cuff
  • Retro-calcaneal Bursitis- pain at the back of ankle or heel
